The Kymani Wax Blend
Scented candles are enjoyed by many as a way of filling your home with luxurious fragrances, but do you really know what’s wafting through your home?
When you start to look, there’s lots of concerning information out there around candle toxicity and sustainability. But rest assured, at Kymani, we’ve done the research and carefully selected the raw materials that are kind to your body, your home and our planet.
The Common Candle Waxes
Paraffin / Mineral Wax (used interchangeably) – the most popular candle wax. This is by far cheapest option as its obtained from petroleum (crude oil), which is a non-renewable resource. But, there’s a price – it emits black soot & toxic fumes whilst burning (like a diesel exhaust!) which has been linked to lung diseases, cancer and asthma! It’s a definite no from us.
Palm Wax – the extraction of palm oils from the leaves of palm trees require mass deforestation and responsible farming certifications aren’t always reliable. At-a-glance, this may seem like an eco-friendly option, but we wanted a wax that’s kinder to our planet, and much more sustainable!
Soy Wax– the cultivation of soy is also linked to mass deforestation, but responsible farming is possible. Soy alone, is very temperamental to work with, and we’ve noticed it’s a struggle to get a consistently strong-smelling candle from this wax alone.
Beeswax – non-toxic, clean & less wasteful but because it comes from bees, it is considered an animal by product and cannot truly be considered cruelty-free, vegan or ethical. It’s up for debate though.
Coconut, Rapeseed & Apricot Waxes – A renewable and sustainable alternative to soy or palm and can be grown locally in the UK and Europe. They also burn clean and hold fragrance really well but can leave imperfections when set.
A note on Additives
Many self-acclaimed natural candle companies resort to using additives to improve the appearance and performance of their candles. Vybars are commonly used to improve opacity, hardness, fragrance retention and colour, whereas Microcrystalline waxes are used for hardness, glass adhesion and elevating fragrance load.
We’ve seen these added to natural soy wax candles to try to mimic some of the qualities of paraffin and to avoid imperfections in the appearance of a natural candle. But we’ve made a conscious choice not to incorporate these into our wax blend, as we embrace all properties of a natural wax candle, including the imperfections! I mean, why claim to be natural & proud, if you’re impersonating something that isn’t…
The Kymani Wax BlendTM
At Kymani we’ve experimented with every single wax & additive mentioned above (with our sustainable, ethical goals at the core) & cherry-picked the best bits from three of our favourites.
The Kymani Wax BlendTM outperforms the other natural wax candles and was painstakingly developed in our founder’s kitchen following months of scientific exploration and endless trials. It is completely additive-free, and provides exceptional olfactory and burning qualities, whilst remaining 100% natural, non-toxic, and affordable.
